Sustainable scale-up of negative emissions technologies and practices: where to focus

Abstract Most climate change mitigation scenarios restricting global warming to 1.5 °C rely heavily on negative emissions technologies and practices (NETPs). Here we updated previous literature reviews conducted an analysis identify the most appealing NETPs. We evaluated 36 NETPs configurations considering their technical maturity, economic feasibility, greenhouse gas removal potential, resource use, environmental impacts. found multiple trade-offs among these indicators, which suggests that a regionalised portfolio of exploiting complementary strengths is way forward. Although no single NETP superior others in terms all indicators simultaneously, identified 16 Pareto-efficient Among them, six are deemed particularly promising: forestation, soil carbon sequestration (SCS), enhanced weathering with olivine three modalities direct air capture storage (DACCS). While co-benefits, lower costs higher maturity levels forestation SCS can propel rapid deployment, require continuous monitoring reduce unintended side-effects—most notably release stored carbon. Enhanced also shows overall good performance substantial but its risks—especially those concerning human health—should be further investigated prior deployment. DACCS presents significantly fewer side-effects, mainly energy demand; early investments this could accelerate scale-up. Our insights help guide future research plan for sustainable scale-up NETPs, must set into motion within decade.
